Resumen

This paper is an attempt to illustrate how style in Ulysses works to subvert the idealogical basis ofmodem patriarchal society, offering the possibility of constructing a more emancipated altemative to its readers. The novel is read as Joyce's textual realisation of Stephen's intention to escape the nets 'of nationality, language, religion' (PAYM 307) and forge in the smithy of [his] soul the uncreated consciousness of [his] race (PAYM 360). In this light Joyce's preference for style over poli tics is interpreted as evidence that far from being an apolítica! artist he is rather one who is profoundly aware ofthe relation between style and ideology, the former a novelistic expression ofthe latter, and that this awareness informs the novel throughout.
